Viennese Karmeliter-viertel

Jewish life and culture have always characterised the charming “Karmeliterviertel” named after the church and the market. This walk takes you through beautiful and hidden parts of the 2nd district.

Where did Johann Strauss son compose the famous Danube Waltz and where was it first performed? Where did Viktor Emil Frankl live? Where was the „Leopoldstadt Temple“ located? Where did Sigmund Freud go to school?

 

We follow the footsteps of many famous personalities such as Johann Strauss Sohn, Alfred Adler and Arthur Schnitzler along Praterstraße, discover hidden passages to Taborstraße and end at the culinary center of the Grätzl (neighbourhood), the Karmelitermarkt.

 

Start: Nepomukkirche, Praterstraße/corner of Nepomukgasse 1, 1020 Vienna (U1 Nestroyplatz, exit Rotensterngasse)

End: Karmelitermarkt, 1020 Vienna (U2 Taborstraße)
